Lesson Number One

God gave me Ulcerative Colitis. I'm a religious person therefore I believe god gave me my disease for a reason. Growing up I was shy and quiet, I never stood up for my self I would just tell my mom and dad what was wrong and they would take care of it. Well that all changed this year, now that I'm 21 I can't always rely on my parents to stand up for me. In todays health care you’re just a number to most doctors until you stand up for yourself the doctors will never take you seriously. I can't stress enough how important it is to be your own advocate. Do your own research, ask question. You will annoy some nurses and doctors and that’s when you know its time to find a new doctor. In the last year and a half I've gone through 4 different doctors. I have to drive three hours away to go to Chapel Hill University to see my doctor, and it is 100 percent worth it because I absolutely trust my doctor and his nurses and I never feel like I'm annoying them when I call them. I believe god gave me this illness for many reasons but this is the one that is most prevalent right now. So lesson number one is to always stand up for your self and be your own advocate!
